Chapter Thirteen

~Barb~

I was able to make it all the way up the stairs, into my bedroom before I allowed myself to stop and think about what was actually happening. Once it all sank in, I didn’t get upset or break down and cry.

I got pissed.

No way in fucking hell did this piece of shit get to drive me from my home. Let him come for me. I would be sitting here, lying in wait for his sociopathic ass with a fully loaded shotgun. My dad didn’t raise me to be some timid little flower ready to wilt from fear. No, I could take care of myself.

I was standing in the closet when I had my little internal rant. Just as I was about to turn and go downstairs to Cole, I saw his leather jacket on the floor toward the back of the closet. I walked over, picked it up and brought it up to my nose. The smell of leather and his cologne took me back to that life-altering night. With one deep inhale, my mind quickly backpedaled.

My pink Sloane Ranger duffel sat on the top shelf of the closet organizer. I grabbed the strap, pulling it down and quickly stuffed clothes it in without even thinking. I wasn’t sure where we were going, but it was winter so I packed for cold weather. I also grabbed a little surprise that I had been holding on to since before he was killed…or whatever you call pretend-dying. When I pulled the bag down, the box came with it. I grabbed a pair of boots and my favorite heels and shoved them on top of the pile of clothes.

Still in my chiffon gown, I decided to change into something a little more conducive to a quick exit. I grabbed a pair of bootcut jeans, long-sleeve thermal top and a tank then set out for my bathroom with my bag over my shoulder and Cole’s jacket in my arms. Along the way, I heard the rumble of a motorcycle and all of the hair on my body stood on end. Surely, if there was a problem, Cole would have come for me. Taking a deep breath, I pushed the worry from my mind and tried to focus on the task at hand.

Changing quickly, I threw my dress over the side of the tub and threw my hair up on top of my head. Most of my makeup was in a cosmetic bag, so I tossed my deodorant, toothbrush and other crap in there then shoved it into my duffel. Cole’s jacket was sitting on the vanity as I looked around, deciding I was all set. I picked it up and slipped my arms in the massive sleeves, one last time. It was my safe place while he was gone. I wore it when I was scared and needed to feel close to him.

Now, I had him. He would keep me safe. I had no doubt in his capabilities. I could relinquish my armor because he was all I would need.
